How can Yoga help teens?

The teen and preteen years can be a pretty trying time. Teens have to deal with many types of change, not just their hormones.

High school can mean a new school, new friends and a whole new way of learning. School gets harder and more competitive and friendship groups can chop and change regularly.

It’s a time when teens are becoming self-reliant and they push the boundaries in the process.

I have heard many parents say they ‘lost’ their teens daughter in a ‘green fog’ for a few years where they could not communicate with them or all they could get from their son is a grunt or a yep.

How does Yoga help?
Developing Focus

We use yoga and meditation techniques to train the mind to concentrate on a single point of focus. This skill can then be used in every facet one’s life inside and outside of the Yoga studio.

Lifts Self Esteem

Yoga is known to make people feel better. Taking time to relax, move in fun ways and working with breath can alter moods and help lift heavy feelings. These techniques can help you feel better about yourself.  This works for everyone and can have a big impact on teens who are often going through an unsettling time.

Teaches Self Soothing

Many people lose the ability to self-sooth in situations that are causing anxiety. We teach our young kids to self-sooth and we expect our older children to continue the skill. This doesn’t always happen especially in uncharted territory when so many things are changing. Relaxation and breathing techniques in Yoga can help teach teens to calm down, skills they can use daily when anxiety and stress becomes too much.

Non competitive

Our classes are noncompetitive and we focus on fun. It seems most activities these days are centred around competing, being measured and needing to improve. In our environment, we remember to have fun. It’s okay to be a little silly and remember to play while learning the skills of Yoga along the way.

What do our Kids think?

I think kids yoga is the best because it is very fun, everyone is nice to you but at the same time it helps you relax with a meditation at the end that lets you let go of all your worries. Our teacher makes sure everyone is having the best time and no one gets left out. It is a fun place to be. Everyone who comes always looks forward to it.
